Sharp Corner

This blog, like so many others, is just a recounting of events in my life. Most of the readers will be my friends (Hi guys!), but the occassional random person may wander in. If you see something interesting here, comment or send me an email, no matter who you are.

Goooooooooooooooooooooaaaaal! Or not.

Well, things haven't been going very well for my new goals. Monday went well, but Tuesday was tough and today was no picnic either. I'm not giving up, though. I just have to find the right path.

One of my biggest hurdles is getting up on time in the morning. For some reason, I can't seem to get on a solid schedule. Sometimes I wake up at 7 and get right up (although, admittedly, this is rare). Sometimes, I reset the alarm for 8 and go back to bed. Sometimes, after either alarm sounds, I just sit in bed, drowsing for half an hour or more. Sometimes, I even roll out of bed as late as 9:30. The later I get up, the less time I have for preparing a proper breakfast and lunch. I'm lucky enough to work somewhere that doesn't mind when I come in, but I'm expected to stay late to make it up. So, sleeping late means staying at work late, which means getting home late, which means I have less time for all my other goals. Also, the later my day starts and ends, the more likely I am to eat poorly.

Is it just a matter of willpower? Do I have to just summon the strength to force myself out of bed, even when I'm tired? This lack of willpower is hurting my sleep, my weight, and my career. I have to find it in myself.

Yes, is my not helpful short answer to the question. *smirk*

Seriously, calculate how much sleep you need to function during the day. Then once you know what time to go to bed, take some melatonin to help you fall asleep for that time. Or figure in some lay-in-the-sun time so your body can make it naturally. My desk is right next to a window all day and I still have to take melatonin to help regulate my sleep. *shrug*

And probably playing video games until the second you're ready to crawl into bed doesn't help the brain waves shut off.

Well, getting to sleep isn't my problem. Getting to bed is. Also, getting up. Once I try to get to sleep, I can sleep pretty much anywhere, at any time. Often, though, I'll have something I want to do for "just a little while longer". Hang out with friends, play video games, read comics, etc.

You have to schedule and stick to it. And you have to stick to the schedule during the weekends. And accept the fact that once you're into the groove and being all productive, shit happens and it takes you a whole week to reach the happy sleeping place again.

I've tried all the tricks like putting the alarm clock across the room or in another room. The only way I hear both of them is if I've had seven to eight hours of sleep. And even then I need to add in about three hours before I leave the house. One hour is actually for getting ready, the other two are supposed to be exercise, cleaning, and writing time but more often function as buffer for when I have used the snooze bar too much.

I still think what would work best for me is an alarm clock that switched on my lights since it's about the one thing I can't sleep through. But short of finding some inventor to rewire my bedroom, I haven't found one that will do that. Have thought about trying the alarm clocks that are supposed to gradual increase the light to wake you up, but I don't want to spend that much on something I don't know will work since I have wood walls and ceiling.

If I were to take 3 hours in the morning, I'd have to get up at 5. 7 hours of sleep would mean going to bed at 10. I get home at 7, typically, so that would give me 3 hours to eat, do chores and relax. Plus, my friends usually aren't available until 8 or later. Basically, my social life would disappear. I'm just not going to turn 5 days out of the week into all work, no play. Not to mention the fact that my girlfriend would dump me.

*Snot* Hon, that's what I have to do thanks to insane commute. And no matter what time I get up and what I actually do, I'm always exhausted by the time I get home so it just works better to do what I have to before I leave the house. Luckily friends are on insane schedules too, so we pretty much schedule everything for the weekends.

Timing is always variable, but you have to stick whatever amount of sleep you need everyday and get up and go to bed at that same time all the time. Monkey with it and it will take days to get it straight again. Don't ask me how pissed I am at SciFi Channel right now. I don't recover from Friday night until Tuesday. And all because they couldn't put BSG back on at 8pm like it was before they took the last hiatus. Only two more episodes to go, thank the gods.

You have a strong point about consistency. It's definitely something I need to work on.
