Sharp Corner

This blog, like so many others, is just a recounting of events in my life. Most of the readers will be my friends (Hi guys!), but the occassional random person may wander in. If you see something interesting here, comment or send me an email, no matter who you are.

2 Challenges

Two ideas occurred to me today.

The first one is putting a halt to buying video games. I've become far too susceptible to the hype surrounding games I think I'll enjoy. When these games come out, it's difficult for me to not buy them. I have dozens of games to play, though. I don't need the latest one. In fact, there are many incentives to waiting to buy a game. They inevitably go down in price (except for the rare gem like Rez). Also, buying a new game means either neglecting one I'm playing now or not starting the one I just bought. The cycle begins anew when I buy the next game before I've even started playing the last one I bought. Left unchecked, I'll just continue to accumulate unplayed games, effectively throwing my money into a deep, dark hole.

This is my pledge: I will not buy any more video games for the rest of the year, for any system. There is only one exception: The Wrath of the Lich King, the next World of Warcraft expansion. That's an add-on to a game I already play, so I'm allowing myself that one expenditure. I will maintain subscriptions for World of Warcraft and Warhammer: Age of Reckoning. I will buy no more games for any console or the PC. No digital downloads, no used games, no casual games. I will play what I have. There are simply too many games to ignore. Even after getting rid of all of my first person shooters, the list is embarrassing.

Completable Games
(having a distinct ending or completion point)
  1. Mass Effect
  2. Oblivion
  3. Ninja Gaiden
  4. Jade Empire
  5. Final Fantasy XII
  6. Rogue Galaxy
  7. Devil May Cray 4
  8. Metal Gear Solid 2
  9. Final Fantasy Tactics A2
  10. Mario Galaxy
  11. Marvel Ultimate Alliance
  12. Black and White II
  13. Assassin's Creed
  14. Braid
  15. Castle Crashers
  16. Fallout 2
Repeatable Games
(having no ending, can be played indefinitely)
  1. Soul Calibur IV
  2. Burnout Paradise
  3. Rez
  4. N+
  5. Puzzle Fighter
  6. Bomberman
  7. Carcassonne
  8. Catan
  9. King of Fighters 11
  10. Rock Band 2
  11. Starcraft
  12. Diablo 2
(These lists are incomplete.  They contain only what I can think of off the top of my head in 5 minutes.)

My second idea is related.  On weekdays, 10 pm is fun time.  Until 10, I do chores, programming, writing, TBA work, organizing, and anything else that is not pure recreation.  The only exception is TV or anime while eating.  Once 10 pm comes around, work ends, and I enjoy myself.  Then, I'll read comics, play video games, read books, assemble models, or anything else.  N0 work, though.

I'm doing this to encourage myself to be more productive.  There are too many things that I can easily handle if I simply take the time to do them.  Most of them take 15 minutes or less, but I too often let myself get distracted by recreational activities.  I have to get that under control.  The 10pm deadline is also a reward of sorts.  It gives me something to look forward to as I work. I'll consider bringing the time up to 9, if I can get far enough ahead of my work.

I know I just bought a game - but, in general, it gets easier as time goes by to not buy all games that come out. (I did that when I was working at Gamestop). Holiday season will be annoying to you, but you have a lot of great games to keep you going. :)

Yeah, it's like that with all addictions, I think. Quitting is the worst, but it gets easier to manage, the longer you go without.

I really do have LOTS of games to play. The others will wait. I must be strong.

This must be what not having to get up at 3am means for people. Because while approve of a deadline for fun time in principle (and considering stealing it for myself) the first thought upon seeing 10pm was "HOLY HELL! I'll be snoring and drooling on the keyboard!" If I'm not unconscious by 10pm, the next day my coworkers keep me locked in my cubicle for the protection of the general sheeple public.

Still since I'm stealing ideas, I'll pass one along. Divide the chores into what must be done daily, weekly, and monthly at least. I found that helped give me free time instead of trying to scrub the house from top to bottom every weekend.

Thanks for the tip. Lack of organization is one of my top 5 sins. I have a very difficult time keeping it all together, for various reasons.

I'm doing something about it, though. I'm reading Getting Things Done. I haven't finished it, yet, but it's full of good ideas I hope to implement soon.

Oh yes, that book is bloody marvelous. Though I have to admit, the inbox idea is so far the only thing I have implemented steadily. But then you've seen my home office before. ;)

The list work when I make them. I have to get back onto that again. I also found Zen To Done a helpful hack on the basic ideas.

I've had to do that with myself, I've kind of had something of the sort enacted for a while now. I know I'm bad about impulse buys, but if I buy something that's an awesome game but I never play, its a waste. So I've really trimmed my game buying down to bare essential must haves, and everything else is a have not (and it has been hard, Jef gets me excited on a lot of games since he's good at finding em.) I feel much less guilty on impulse buys now because I don't buy games that frequently. When I had a lot of gamer friends I did caught up in all the awesome games that were coming out, but so many games are epicly long you have to go with what's best for you personally and pass up on game even though they're good. I still have Kingdom Hearts 2 and Okami sitting on my shelf untouched. I know I'll love em, I just don't seem to get around to sitting down and playing em. I also know I get OC about playing new games, so if I did I'd be neglecting something else I should be working on.

I've also been going through my games and making myself let go of the collector habit- I have a stack of games that are good, but honestly I'll never touch again. Either they're done or I just won't pick them up again so its time to let go. I'm going to try to ebay those off.

One thing about a schedule, it just doesn't work for me. I don't do well with the 'well I'll work until x time and then I get fun time!' I get distracted by thinking about the fun thing I want to do, that I don't get all the work done. I instead have to kind of sit myself down and say 'ok what do I need to accomplish today, and what have I done work related?' I can do fun things if I'm willing to stop early and go back to the work things. Its probably easier with a job since that time is unavoidably assigned, its crazy how busy I feel without one but I end up wasting a lot of time.
